COMFORT FOOD
Clay, Resin, Thrifted Dishware
2023-Ongoing
“Comfort Food” investigates the relationship between comfort, community, and loss through a sculptural series of common “funeral food” or “bereavement foods” which are traditionally provided to those in mourning as a gesture of sympathy.
The series aims to satirize the paradoxical relationships between these acts of community care and the often unsolicited and trite messages about how the bereaved should be handling their loss that come along with them. While the simple act of being present with someone who is grieving can offer so much, this work aims to showcase some of the worst advice we give those who are grieving, and turn a critical eye to why even the most well-meaning of us culturally rely on platitudes instead of meaningfully engaging with the discomfort at hand. While sometimes it may seem safer to utter an overused phrase, one wonders if they provide any comfort in comparison to the carbs they are presented alongside.
