COMFORT FOOD
Polymer, Resin, Acrylic, Latex, Thrifted Dishware
2023-Ongoing
"Comfort Food" explores the intricate connections between comfort, community, and loss through a sculptural series featuring "funeral foods" or "bereavement foods" traditionally offered as gestures of sympathy to the grieving. This project not only delves into these acts of community care but also critically examines the often unsolicited, clichéd advice that accompanies them.
By satirizing the paradox between the meaningful presence of support and the trite platitudes that are frequently offered, this series invites viewers to reflect on the quality of our communal responses to grief. It questions why, despite our best intentions, we culturally lean on hollow phrases instead of genuinely engaging with the discomfort and complexities of mourning.
"Comfort Food" seeks to ignite community conversations, encouraging a deeper understanding of how we can better support each other during times of loss. It challenges us to move beyond the safety of overused phrases and consider whether true comfort lies in our words or the shared experience of simply being there for one another.
